Dakota Beach Informal Settlement Fire – Isipingo, Durban
In the early hours of Tuesday, 9 July 2025, a major fire broke out at the Dakota Beach Informal Settlement in Isipingo, Durban.
The fire engulfed more than 180 homes in a densely populated area, leaving over 400 residents displaced, many with nothing more than the clothes on their backs.
AIR Relief, in partnership with Darul Ihsan and other committed local partners, immediately activated an emergency response through a Joint
Operations Committee (JOC). This structure enabled swift coordination and deployment of relief efforts, including:
• Emergency accommodation and shelter setup
• A fully operational onsite kitchen providing hot meals to affected families
• Mobilization of volunteers, logistics teams, and local networks
• Close coordination with eThekwini Disaster Management and other government structures
The rapid response was made possible through prior planning, trust-based partnerships, and clear communication between all stakeholders.
The disaster prompted fast-tracked assessments, which paved the way for government authorities to begin facilitating support for the rebuilding of homes and restoring dignity to affected residents.
What’s Needed Now
With immediate shelter and food needs stabilized, the next 7–10 days are critical. To help affected families transition back to stability, AIR
Relief is appealing for:
• Clothing items (adults & children)
• Basic cooking appliances (kettles, 2-plate stoves, pots)
• School uniforms and shoes for children eager to return to school
AIR Relief continues to work hand-in-hand with all stakeholders through the JOC, ensuring that every donation and act of assistance is targeted, timely, and sustainable.
We thank all our partners, volunteers, and donors who stepped in to make a difference where it mattered most.
